History of Sofas:or Sofas in the History

A sofa is an elegant piece of furniture that has become an essential part of everybody’s homes today.
A sofa originated way back even before the Renaissance period. The sofas back then were quite simple and consisted of a wooden framework upholstered with leather.

However, nowadays a sofa is a fancy affair. It can be upholstered in either leather or in a variety of textiles such as linen, rayon or even cotton sometimes. You can buy a sofa according to your budget and still have thousands options available at your disposal.

You could go in for simple sofa padded with foam or cotton and upholstered with cotton or if you are in the mood for spending quite a bit then you could probably go in for a plush sofa with leather upholstery and spring cushions. However, you should always keep in mind the fact that your sofa should complement the color scheme of the room you are going to place it in and should not stand out in a way that attracts rude comments.

The padding of sofas and the use of spring cushions is a pretty new concept and has emerged in the recent years. There are various types of sofas as well. There can be the British loveseat which ideally sits two people and then there is the settee which is meant for three or more people. There is also the divan, the chaise lounge, the canapé and the ottoman. The divan is a kind of a sofa that has a partial or no back rest at all.

The chaise lounge is a particularly long one with only one armrest. It has a very glamorous feel to it. The canapé is essentially an ornamental or decorative piece of furniture meant to seat three people at the most. The ottoman is the smallest and the simplest one with no arm rests or a back rest.

It is generally used as a foot stool or a foot rest and usually accompanies a normal sofa that seats one. You can also have sectional sofas which is a pretty modern concept. Sectional sofas consist of two or three sections that come together to form a complete sofa. These sections can be joined at right angles or at angles slightly larger than that. But the key characteristic of a sofa should be the kind of comfort it provides to the person who sits on it.
